AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver (ACF) has been reformulated to provide maximum cold flow capabilities in diesel fuels. The new formulation provides superior performance over the former DFF formulation, which is available while supplies last.

Cold Weather and Diesel Fuel
As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel or prevent it from starting. While low-quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F (4°C), most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F (0°C).

#1 Diesel Fuel
One traditional solution to cold-weather problems in diesel engines is the use of #1 diesel fuel, which is diesel fuel diluted with kerosene. While #1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low temperature operability, there are also several disadvantages. The energy content of #1 diesel fuel is about 95 percent of #2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and less horsepower. In addition, the kerosene used in #1 diesel fuel provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, increasing the likelihood for wear on these critical components.

Cold Weather Performance Parameters
There are several areas of diesel fuel improvement touted by various cold flow additive manufacturers, including pour point, cloud point and cold filter plugging point (CFPP). Many claims can be misleading, so it is important to understand this terminology in order to determine which products truly provide superior performance.

It is important to distinguish between CFPP and pour point. Many competitive products make great claims regarding pour point, leading consumers to believe their products are superior when they actually have an inferior CFPP. Once fuel surpasses its cloud point, the wax crystals begin to clog the fuel filter. The CFPP temperature is a more important characteristic than pour point because the engine will not run if fuel cannot pass through the fuel filter.

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver
AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver provides superior fuel flow to help prevent filter plugging in cold temperatures. It is formulated for a broad range of diesel fuels, including #1 diesel fuel, #2 diesel fuel, biodiesel and hard-to-treat ULSD fuels. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower quality #1 diesel fuel, helping maintain fuel economy and keep engines functioning normally. It is also excellent for use with home heating oil and kerosene heat systems.

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver uses a jet-fuel-type deicer that disperses water to control ice formation throughout the fuel system. It inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel pour point by as much as 58°F (32°C), allowing fuel to flow to the engine more easily and improving diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures. In addition, AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver lowers the CFPP by as much as 34°F (18°C) in ULSD.

Concentrated ACF vs. ACF Blended with Fuel
The new formulation of AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver will show no signs of solidifying in its concentrated state in the bottle until the temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C), a great improvement over the previous formulation, which solidified in the bottle at 0°F (-18°C). Cold Flow Improver will only freeze in its concentrated state, and AMSOIL recommends storing it at temperatures above 0°F (-18°C). If ACF is allowed to freeze in the bottle it can be thawed and used. When mixed with diesel fuel, ACF effectively improves diesel fuel cold temperature properties. It is recommended, however, that fuel be treated at temperatures above 32° F (0°C). ACF will not dissolve wax crystals which have already formed in the fuel.

Application Information
AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver is specifically formulated for improving fuel flow, helping maintain fuel integrity and preventing the clogging of filters and injectors. It is excellent for use with diesel fuels, heating oils and kerosene. Two oz. of AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver treats five gallons of fuel, or one 16 oz. bottle for 40 gallons. The clear bottles feature an easy-to-read graduation label for accurate dispensing, helping ensure proper treat ratios.

Q&A

Product: AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver

Product Area: Specialty Products

Created: 8/28/06

Published Date: 1/3/07

1.      Question:

Will the new AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver adequately treat federal regulated ultra low sulfur diesel fuel or USLD?

Answer:

Yes. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver is specifically designed for ultra low sulfur diesel fuels. This fuel is different than traditional diesel fuel in several ways; what really matters is that it is more difficult to properly treat with additives than existing diesel fuel. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver also treats non-USLD diesel fuel.

2.      Question:

What are some key advantages for the AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver (ACF)?

Answer:

Key advantages are:

Jet Fuel type deicer disperses water to control ice formation in all sections and parts of fuel systems.

Improves diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures.

Formulated for a broad range of diesel fuels including biodiesel and hard to treat USLD fuels.

Provides superior fuel flow to help avoid filter plugging in cold temperatures.

Creates a reduction in the pour point of the fuel, making it easy for the fuel system to use and the engine to consume.

Minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with the lower quality #1 diesel fuel during cold temperatures. This will also keep the engine functioning close to normal and help to maintain fuel economy.

Excellent for use with home heating oil and kerosene heat systems.

3.      Question:

What is the treat rate for AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver (ACF)?

Answer:

The treat rate is 2 ounces of additive to 5 gallons of fuel or 1 bottle treats 40 gallons of fuel. The bottle is natural in color and is graduated for accurate dispensing, to ensure you are mixing for proper treat ratios.

4.      Question:

When I stored the AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver in my vehicle last night, it appeared to “freeze”. Can I still use it?

Answer:

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver will solidify at temperatures below 0° F (-18° C). AMSOIL recommends storing at temperatures above 0°F (-18°C) and preferably 32°F (0°C) offering a buffer between its freeze point and the recommended storage temperature. Freezing will not harm and it can be used once thawed.

5.      Question:

How can AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver work if it freezes at 0° F (-18° C)?

Answer:

Only it its concentrated state does AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver freeze. Once mixed with diesel fuel, it effectively lowers diesel fuel cold temperature properties.

6.      Question:

What should I do in the winter to adjust for the cold temperatures?

Answer:

AM SOIL recommends that you purchase a diesel fuel that has been winterized for your area and to add AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver, which will ensure that your engine or heating system will function on those very cold days when you need it most.

7.      Question:

Should Cold Flow Improver be used in the fuel to keep gel from clogging the fuel system? Answer:

Yes. As temperatures drop, the wax, which is naturally found in the fuel, begins to form crystals. This is called the cloud point. These wax crystals will eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel or prevent it from ever starting. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver must be added to the fuel before it gets cold enough for the wax crystals to begin forming. Low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F. AMSOIL recommends ACF be added to fuel when temperatures are beginning to reach 32°F, which is above the cloud point in most diesel fuel. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel fuel cold temperature properties by as much as 20°F (11°C).

8.      Question:

Competitive products claim better cold temperature properties than AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver. Is this accurate?

Answer:

Competitor claims can be misleading. It is very important to distinguish between cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and pour point. Many competitive products make great pour point claims leading consumers to believe their product is superior, when in reality, the CFPP is not that great. The CFPP is more important because if the fuel clogs the filter, what good does a lower pour point provide? None. Furthermore, ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) is a hard to treat fuel due to its extensive refining. Some competitive claims may not be based on ULSD fuels, so in reality the data does not apply to modern ULSD fuels.

9. Question:

Why shouldn’t I just use Diesel Fuel #1 if available?

Answer:

While #1 Diesel Fuel has an advantage in low temperature operability; there are several disadvantages, as well. The energy content of #1 Diesel Fuel is about 95% that of #2 Diesel Fuel and as a result reduces fuel economy and horsepower. #1 Diesel Fuel contains kerosene which provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, thus increasing the chances of wear on these critical parts.

10.   Question:

Does AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver work with #1 diesel fuel?

Answer:

Yes, it works very well and further enhances #1 diesel fuel cold temperature properties.

11.  Question:

What are the differences among diesel fuels, heating oils and kerosenes?

Answer:

Diesel fuels, heating oils and kerosenes are all products distilled from crude oil. While they are similar, there are some critical specification and legal differences among the products that prohibits companies or individuals from using them interchangeably. Each fuel type was designed for a specific application and so their properties differ. Combining them to can lead to unwanted and sometimes costly or harmful effects.

Fuel type and application

Diesel fuels

Internal combustion engines (Injection with compression ignition)

Heating oils

Oil burners/Furnace (Injection with direct flame)

Kerosene

Lamps and non-vented heaters (Wick burning)

Each of these fuels is designed for the environment / application in which it will be consumed. The properties that are good for their environment / application, may not be good for other environments / applications, and in most cases should not be mixed. Other key differences are the delivery and filtering systems used in each environment / application. You wouldn’t want to put a coarsely or un-filtered fuel into a system that has a fine filtering system or fine mist injectors, would you? If you did, the system would clog every time you tried to use it, requiring disassembly for cleaning, then reassembly, some parts may even be damaged requiring them to be replaced.

AM SOIL Cold Flow Improver is specifically formulated for improving the flow of the fuel, helping to maintain the integrity of the fuel and prevent the clogging of the filter or injectors. Use it in any of the applications mentioned above for safe reliable engine performance and home heating in cold temperatures.

12. Question:

Can I use AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver in my home heating fuel?

Answer:

Yes, it does an excellent job improving the cold temperature properties of heating oil. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver is perfectly suited and recommended for diesel fuel, heating oils, and kerosene distilled crude oil products.
