Improve Fuel Economy in Four-Wheel Drive Vehicles Four-wheel drive vehicles often receive poor fuel efficiency. Four Wheeler Editorial Director Douglas McColloch offers the following tips for increasing fuel efficiency in four-wheel drive vehicles: 1) After installing bigger tires, regear the axles to ensure optimal engine rpm at cruising speeds. The speedometer should also be recalibrated. 2) If running a three-speed transmission, consider an overdrive unit. A manual transmission also provides an increase in fuel efficiency. 3) Ensure the engine and fuel-delivery system are tuned. Improper carb jetting, clogged injectors and filters, improperly gapped spark plugs and worn out 02 sensors can all decrease fuel economy. 4) Install freer-flowing aftermarket air filter and exhaust components that improve intake and exhaust flow. 5) Use synthetic lubricants for reduced wear, better viscosity retention and longer service intervals. (*see #1 below - AMSOIL Lubricants) 6) Keep tires properly inflated and wheels aligned. 7) Install an electric cooling fan to replace the stock beltdriven fan. 8) Shed excess weight such as lightbars, nerf bars, side steps, jerrycans, auxiliary lights and storage boxes during the winter months. 9) Turn off the A/C when it is unnecessary. 10) Avoid short trips, jackrabbit starts and too-high (or too-low) revving.
Note: In addition to the above article I recommend the following fuel savings practices: 1) The use of AMSOIL synthetic motor oils is a tried and true method of increasing fuel efficiency. Independent tests indicate synthetic lubricants can increase fuel efficiency by 2 percent to 5 percent, while field testing and on-road operation indicate AMSOIL synthetic motor oils yield even greater fuel economy benefits. 2) Use a high-quality fuel with the lowest appropriate octane rating. Use the manufacture's octane recommendation which can be found in the owners manual. There is no benefit to using premium octane gas in a vehicle that has been designed and calibrated for regular. 3) Use AMSOIL's P.I. Performance Improver Gasoline Additive each time you fill up. Ideal for both fuel injected and carbureted fuel systems. Dissolves and removes fuel system and valve deposits and other contaminants for improved power and overall fuel economy and performance in gasoline engines. 4) Trailer pulling: Tests have shown that when approaching a long uphill grade you should slowly accelerate in advance of the hill. If you wait until the vehicle is climbing the grade this will waste a considerable amount of fuel to maintain highway speed. 5) Park in the shade to keep car cool and reduce the need for air conditioning. 6) Whenever possible drive with the windows fully closed. I personally have tested the benefits of running with the windows up vs down in my Dodge Viper race car. The results: an increase in top terminal speed and greater fuel mileage when compared to running at full speed with the windows down.
AMSOIL is the undisputed leader in synthetics...... Since 1972, AMSOIL Synthetics have proven to be the BEST. AMSOIL also engineers and manufactures Super Duty Oil filters which have a 25,000 mile service life as well as specialized filtration systems for commercial and fleet applications in cars and light, medium and heavy trucks which can filter particles down to less than one micron (a standard full flow oil filter can only filter to 20-25 microns with any degree of efficiency) making oil changes virtually unnecessary and virtually eliminating engine wear. These filters have been proven by millions of miles of over-the road trucks, construction equipment and fleet service. · AMSOIL saves you time and money. · The only 25,000 mile/one- year and 35,000/one- year motor oil in the world. · Exceeds the most stringent performance specifications of all major U.S. and foreign automotive and truck manufacturers. · Provides up to two-times the wear protection of other motor oils. · Increases the life of your vehicle. · Improves performance, fuel economy and efficiency. · Diesel oil and filtration products designed to deliver 1,000,000 miles for over-the-road trucks before engine overhaul. · Used by many national racing teams, fleets, police departments, construction firms and trucking companies.
